Debbie’s 25 years as an educator includes a combination of skills as a School Counselor (k-12), Post-Secondary Academic Adviser, Admissions Recruiter, Adjunct Professor, Retention Specialist, and Student Advocate. She was additionally employed as a Program Director, Career Development Facilitator, and Mental Health Therapist. During her time in these positions, she became certified as a FAFSA and Scholarship Specialist, as well as receiving training on 504s and IEPs. She has had the pleasure of partnering with students and families of all academic levels and backgrounds, and understands the importance of developing strong relationships by listening to their “personal story”. Her passion is to inspire and assist her students by making them feel more prepared and empowered as they navigate their journey of making important decisions, identifying their goals, and accomplishing their personal dreams. 

Debbie understands the responsibility of meeting her students’ individual needs and has prepared for this by having earned a Bachelors in Counseling Psychology, a Master of Arts in Counseling (for both School and Community), and a Master of Science in Education for Learning Experience Design and Education Technology. She is additionally licensed as a Professional Counselor, holds a School Counselor License, and is certified as a Career Development Facilitator and FAFSA/Scholarship Specialist. In addition to formal education, she regularly creates opportunities for learning by attending professional conferences, holding memberships, participating on coalition committees, and by providing volunteer services. 

AWARDS: During her time as a Professional Academic Advisor for Oakland University, Debbie not only received numerous Advisor of the Month awards (2013-2016), but was also acknowledge as their “Best and Brightest” while receiving Oakland University’s Outstanding New Professional Academic Advising Award (2015). She was then honored with the Michigan Outstanding Advising Award (MIACADA, 2017), the National/Global Outstanding Advising Award (NACADA, 2017), and the Regional Excellence in Advising Award (NACADA Region V, 2018). Additionally, while working on her Master’s degree at WGU, Debbie was awarded four Excellence Awards by the Evaluation Faculty for work completed on her Capstone.
